The practices pulling ahead right now aren’t doing anything flashy. They’re just not standing still.

Staying still is still a decision.

The practices pulling ahead right now aren’t doing anything flashy. They’re just not standing still.

By Nate Woudstra, EOS Healthcare Marketing

Every few years, something shifts underneath the marketing playbook that most practices are still running on. It doesn’t announce itself. There’s no headline that says “this is the year everything changed.” It just quietly moves, and the practices paying attention adjust. The ones that aren’t find out later, usually when a number they care about starts sliding and nobody can say exactly why.

We’re in one of those shifts right now.

The way people search isn’t the way it was two years ago

Search used to mean a list of blue links. Now it increasingly means an answer, generated before anyone clicks anything. AI-powered search results are already summarizing, comparing, and recommending, often without sending a single visitor to a website at all. A practice can have a perfectly fine website and still be functionally invisible in the moment that matters, when someone nearby is deciding where to go.

That’s not a future problem. It’s already happening, quietly, in the background of every search a potential patient runs.

“Good enough” was a strategy for a slower environment

A lot of practices built their online presence once, handed it to an agency, and moved on to running the practice, which is exactly where their attention should be. That approach made sense when the underlying rules didn’t move much year to year. They move constantly now. Search engines update, patient expectations shift, and whatever worked eighteen months ago is quietly losing ground today even if nothing about the practice itself has changed.

The uncomfortable part isn’t that things changed. It’s that most practices won’t know until it shows up in the numbers.

Staying current isn’t a one-time project

This is the part that’s easy to miss. Fixing a website is a project. Staying ahead of how patients search, how competitors position themselves, and how visible a practice actually is in AI-driven results is not a project, it’s an ongoing discipline. It means someone is actually watching, on a regular basis, for what changed and what it means for you specifically.

Most agencies aren’t built to do that. They’re built to deliver a project and move to the next client. Which is a completely reasonable business model. It’s just not the same thing as staying current.

Why we’re writing this

This is more or less what we do all day at EOS. We work with dental, veterinary, and healthcare practices specifically, and a fair amount of our job is simply staying closer to these shifts than the practices we work with have time to. Not because we’re smarter, but because it’s the actual job, continuously, not a one-time deliverable.

We’re not writing this to scare anyone into a decision. Most practices are doing fine. But “doing fine” and “staying ahead” aren’t always the same thing, and the gap between them tends to be invisible right up until it isn’t.

Let’s map the pathway forward.

We’ll walk through what’s changed and where the openings are, including whether a Strategic Growth Consultation is the right next step for your practice.
